Leonard’s Bakery – A Sweet Slice of History
July 16th, 2024
Located just a few blocks from Kuilei Place on Kapahulu Avenue, Leonard’s Bakery is a beloved icon of our neighborhood. Famous for its delectable malasadas, this family-owned bakery has woven its sweet legacy into the fabric of our island for decades.
The journey of Leonard’s Bakery began in 1882 when Leonard’s grandparents, Arsenio and Amelia DoRego, set sail from San Miguel Island, Portugal, to Maui. The DoRegos were among the many Portuguese immigrants who came to Hawaiʻi in the late 19th century to work on the sugar plantations. They brought with them cherished traditions and recipes.
In 1952, Leonard Rego decided to honor his heritage by opening a bakery in Honolulu. Leonard’s Bakery was born, and with it, the introduction of malasadas to the local community. Initially baked for Shrove Tuesday, a Portuguese tradition, malasadas quickly captured the hearts of kamaʻāina and visitors alike.
The bakery’s signature pink boxes and the sweet aroma of fresh malasadas have become iconic symbols of Kapahulu Avenue. Whether enjoyed plain, filled with custard, or dusted with cinnamon, these delightful treats have turned casual visitors into lifelong fans.
Leonard’s has thrived in Kapahulu for over 70 years, a testament to the love it receives. Despite changes and challenges, the bakery has remained a family affair, with each generation upholding the legacy and continuing to innovate. Today, it not only offers its famous malasadas but also a variety of other baked goods, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
“It is wonderful to see Leonard’s Bakery proudly continuing their family tradition, serving baked goods and malasadas that bring joy to both longtime residents and new visitors,” said Crystine Ito, marketing manager at Leonard’s Bakery. “Their unwavering commitment to quality, hard work, and community has been the cornerstone of their success for more than 70 years.”
As we strive to build a strong community at Kuilei Place, we take pride in celebrating local treasures like Leonard’s. Together, we can ensure that their cherished treats continue to thrive for generations, enriching our neighborhood with warmth, heritage, and delicious malasadas.
